Last few hours of my "Summer of Fun"

At my house, summer ends Labor Day weekend, which gives me just a few more hours to make 800 yo-yos before the deadline on my Summer of Fun.  One deadline I'm not going to miss is making a cover for my sewing machine.  It was close, and even though the pattern was called, Start Today, Finish Tomorrow, it took me three days to make my cover.

I got the idea of a cover for my sewing machine when I saw this pattern in the August issue of American Patchwork and Quilting.  The pattern is by Monique Dillard of Open Gate Quilts.

The main reason it took me all summer to make my cover is that I couldn't decide on my fabric, but when I was out in Washington I saw some Lucy's Crab Shack by Sweetwater for Moda and knew that it was just what I needed.  I had seen this family of fabric online, but for some reason I was always distracted by the dark gray fabrics in that line, but once I was able to see the full line in person, and could ignore the gray, I knew it would look great in my sewing room.

My sewing machine is longer and shorter than the one in the pattern.  Instructions for tailoring the size of your cover for your machine are included in the pattern, but mine came out too large the first try, but just right the second.

The extra day was spent quilting all those sides.    I went with a simple horizontal and vertical one inch in width design.  I don't quilt things very often, but every time I do, I'm always amazed how much time it eats up.  I left the backside plain, but think it looks just fine.

Here it is, on my machine,

a perfect fit,  as long as my sewing machine is in this table!

So when that cover is not on my machine, which is pretty much all day long, I keep it hanging in my sewing room closet.

And even though this cover is only on my machine at the end of the day, I have to admit to peeking in my sewing room before I go to bed and as soon as I get up, just to see that cover.  I think it was worth three days of my sewing time.

Dawn at First Light Designs finished her cover this weekend too, be sure to take a peek, she customized hers with a pocket and a cut out for her handle.

I'll do a recap of my Summer of  Fun goals in a post later in the week, hope you can stop back by!

  3. Love the cover!!! I was going to make one, but then I found some nice tea towels I had stashed and just draped one over each machine, lol.

  4. The cover makes your sewing machine look like a present - a happy, inviting one. It's what I feel every time I take the cover off my machine. (Course my cover gets nestled in the crook of my ironing board... maybe it should get more respect.)

  5. Love it even better than the original. I may have to make one or two once I move into my new sewing space!

  7. I love your fabric selection for your cover--so cheery. I bought a pattern to make one for my daughter when I gave her my old Bernina, but never got to it. After she passed away, it's been sitting in my stash "to do." Maybe it would be good therapy to do it for National Sewing Month! XOXO

  11. Love your cover! It is on my "to do" list and after I have seen yours and Dawn's cover, I must move it up the list. Thanks for letting us know about size! Cheery looking to start your day.

I can't remember my guess for the yo-yos but I think you need to make lots more yo-yos if I am going to have a change at winning!!! lol

  13. You have 265 days until next summer starts, so if you did 4 yo-yo's a day, you could have them done in time to fill your vases by next summer.
