Hill Country Baskets, a Finish!

The last time I blogged about Hill Country Baskets it was in pieces after I separated all the rows to swap out the very black black cornerstones.

Now it's all back together again with new cornerstone fabric and new setting triangles.

Someone asked why I couldn't reuse the setting triangles,  I had trimmed them down to square up the quilt when I thought I was finished so they were smaller than the size called for in the pattern, plus a little wonky from being in the quilt then out of the quilt.  I kept them though, they are in my red scrap drawer and will make their way into a quilt someday I'm sure.

For grins, here's the quilt in its "I can't live with it" stage.

I know what most of you are thinking, there's not much difference in those black cornerstones, there's more of a difference in person than in the picture, REALLY!   The pattern quilt was bigger than mine, I think it finished at something like 96' x 96", 7 baskets across and 7 down, I wanted mine smaller so I went 6 baskets across and 7 down.  But once I had it apart I decided I liked the square size and dropped a few baskets, so the revised quilt is shorter, but square, did you even notice?

I really preferred the red viney fabric for the setting triangles from my first attempt, it was softer, but I could not find any, anywhere, this family of fabric is a couple of years old, so I went with a different red, still from the family but it's a bolder red.  I like it better now that the borders are on.

And here it is!  I sure made this harder than it needed to be, but it's done and I love it.  A very different palette for me, with the blues.  I enjoyed the change of pace so much I even selected blue for the outer border.  I wish you could see it in person, it is simply lovely, so much lovelier than portrayed in this picture.

This is Lifetime Quilt Number 97!
The pattern is Hill Country Baskets by Paula Barnes for Bonnie Blue/Red Crinoline Quilts.
The fabric is Hemming House by Brannock & Patek for Moda, except for the basket block sashing, that is by Judy Rothermel for Marcus Brothers.
This quilt finished at 81" x 81".
It has 1,334 pieces.

On to quilt number 98, then 99, then 100!!

  3. Looks great! Toning down the cornerstones made a bigger difference than I thought it would and I like the slightly brighter red for the setting triangles, especially with the blue borders. This quilt will nicely complement your red decor.

  5. When you showed the quilt the other day I just knew you would end up taking it apart, that's why I suggested using the deep blue instead of black for the cornerstones. I'm sure you're glad you went to all that trouble, because now you have a quilt that you love. It is beautiful.

  14. It's great! And I did notice the square v rectangle. What a good lesson that when we invest our money and so much of our time we should really try to get it right for ourselves.

  15. Oh, it's gorgeous with the changes! Yep, I noticed the new square shape right away and wondered if you have plans for the extra baskets. :) I really like the stronger red for the setting triangles, and that blue outer border is a big success!

  19. Like you said, I can not see much difference in the cornerstones. I did enlarge the picture thought and could see the different fabric used that way. You know, you put so much of your time and effort into a quilt, you want it to be just the way you like, so I do think you did right by getting the cornerstones the way you liked. I love the look of the finished top - great choice for the border. Nice!!!

  20. You were so right to change out the cornerstones! I even like the new red setting triangles better. Next time, send a shout out if you are looking for the same fabric. One of us will surely have it.

  22. Beautiful!! I like how the blacks are soft like the rest of the quilt. And I love the blue in it too... and the red setting triangles... and well, everything about it. Just a wonderful quilt! So many of your quilts are among my favorites and this is one of them.

  24. A wonderful finish. I can see a difference in the corner stones. A softer look. I would have probably just left it with the black had I made the top as I so hate to rip out. I do like the new version better though. Wise that you cut new triangles as the others would probably have stretched during the process of taking out stitches.

  25. I can certainly tell the difference - like others have said, it is a much softer look with the new softer black. Good job! And many brownie points for having that much patience!

I'm definitely a blue girl, so love the colors of the quilt and border!

  26. I can tell the difference too and although I liked the black, I can certainly see how your "eye" was a better judge for the overall look. Wow! three more until a hundred; what an accomplish. XOXO

  32. I'm fairly certain I would not have taken the quilt apart had it been mine. That said, I love how yours has finished up! Very pretty with its new cornerstones and blue border. Just lovely. This is a labor of love quilt - you love it more after all that labor! Happy quilting!

  34. Even though I was in the "leave it!" group, I think your changes really pulled the top together and the baskets still pop at you. Well done!

  35. A world of difference between the two blacks and you picked a winning fabric to remake the cornerstones with! I agree with many others about the last border of blue...a perfect 10!
