HST - A decision and a little tweaking

"tweaking", does anyone besides me think of "You've Got Mail" when the word "tweaking" comes up?  "A project that needs tweaking?" says Tom Hanks to Meg Ryan.

Anyway, I digress, I've gotten some great pictures and links to other half square triangle quilts and half square triangle quilts that used Happy Go Lucky by Bonnie and Camille for Moda, thanks for the help!  I'm not the only one who enjoys making these blocks.  I'm pleased to report I've finally come up with a plan for my blocks.

Instead of connecting all the big blocks, I've decided to separate them with some sashing.  My favorite thing about my blocks are the blocks of color, I've decided to keep those blocks distinctive by adding the sashing.

So once I came up with a plan, I needed to come up with 2 more blocks.  The first thing I did was tweak these two blocks

to create this block,

this block,

and this block.

And since I created two navy blue blocks, I decided to take the navy blue out of  this block to make it more green,

and made this block.

That left one more spot so I created another orange block.

So I'm finally happy with all 9 blocks.  All I need now is a little sashing, a border, and this one will be done.

I'm sort of sad to be done with those Happy Go Lucky hsts, I may need to make some more sometime.

One last thing, I use the Easy Angle to piece my hsts. I've used that tool for years, it just suits me, but I still make them a tad big and square them up.  Several folks have been asking about that, I should have thought to include that little piece of information in the very first post, so thanks for asking!

  1. Oh my....I can see where you are going with these and it is coming together just great. You amaze me Thelma and how great those colors are when you changed they to all the same. This is going to be an eye popper too!

  4. It's been fun following your progress on this quilt. I think you made some very good decisions in changing those blocks. I love the way your quilt has turned out. I'm going to keep this idea in mind for leftover fabric.

  7. That many half square triangles makes me dizzy! But I love the feeling, lol. I just bought a roll of the 1/2 square paper as my first jump into the craziness...since I am not sure I could actually make them all fit together on my own,

  10. I'm so glad you got on the HST bandwagon! This will be a wonderful quilt when finished. I like the idea of sashing to keep the squares separate. I made an HST quilt with the leftovers of another quilt; it took a while to decide how to lay them out. So I played for a long time...and took pictures of different possibilities (which are endless, by the way). Anyways, you can see them here if you need some ideas for your next quilt that uses HSTs... http://www.flickr.com/photos/36235147@N03/sets/72157626890668057/

  16. This is a great idea! I have a line of fabric that I didn't know what to do with - this is great and your sashing to separate them all looks so good. :o) Thanks for the tip on the tool! I like to make things larger and square up also! :O)

  18. At least you are tweaking and not TWERKing! LOL... I have used my leftover HSTs to make some pieced basket blocks in the past - I consider them freebies!
