New Month, New Quilt . . . .

It's February, already, time to hang a different quilt in my living room. I don't think I've blogged about this quilt since it came home from the quilter. This quilt could not compliment my living room decor any better.

This is Lifetime Quilt #67 named Olde World Stars. The pattern is Root Beer Float by Hyacinth Designs and the fabric, Olde World Style by Monique Dillard for Maywood Studios.

This quilt went through some ugly stages, (click here) but sure turned out nicely in the end.

The last time I blogged about a finished quilt I got a request for a close-up of the quilting, here's my best attempt at it. The quilting is simple and sparse. I'm usually a "more is more" type of gal but in this case "less is more" and it works perfectly. Dawn at the Sewing Basket quilted this top for me.

Here's a view from the back, you can sort of see some of the quilting. This is the fabric that I originally was going to use as a border but then decided against it, it makes a super back.

Another update, I knew it was going to happen sooner or later but I must admit I was not prepared for what I found on my kitchen counter today,

EEEEK, my first leaf off my $4.99 Miracle Home Depot Poinsettia.

Isn't that just the saddest thing you've ever seen, I suspect there are going to be more sad days to come. For now, I'm going to focus on the pretty blooms on the top. Besides, with this unusually warm temperatures we've been having, I'm bound to have some things blooming in my yard real soon, the circle of plant life.

Have you noticed we get an extra day this year, and that day comes this month! A whole extra day, what a wonderful gift. I think we all should decide to make that one day something special, a day to do whatever we please. I've not nailed down the details in my head yet, but I think my day will involve no make-up, pjs, sewing, and cupcakes. If I could just get Starbucks to deliver. Have you given this any thought because I'm open to suggestions.

  2. I love the rod that you hang your quilts on. I would love to add one to my family room wall. I looked at similar rods at Ikea, but my husband felt they wouldn't be strong enough to hold a quilt. I hate to add rod pockets to quilts! Could you share where you got your rod and any tips for hanging quilts this way.
    Thanks,
    Cheryl

  6. You have the prettiest quilts to hang each month!! I'm going to do that when we move. I have put my foot down about whatever house we get: It MUST have good quilt walls, and it MUST either have an awesome bathtub or space to put one in. ;D

  8. Great looking quilt - it adds a wonderful sparkle to the wall. Your suggestion for the 29th has gotten me thinking...why not have a 'me' day? Just think of all those folks born on 2/29 who get to celebrate this year!

  10. Thelma,
I have been wanting to comment about the poinsettia. It is lovely....I have really good luck with them as they will retain most of their colorful blooms throughout the spring. During the summer they still have their green leaves until I cut them back. You can get them to rebloom by putting them in a closet October 1 so that they have no more than 10-12 hours of light. (Even artificial light counts, so you need to put them in room or closet that is dark to ensure they have 12 hours of darkness.) I’ve gotten them to that point but have trouble remembering to bring them out of the dark closet for 10-12 hours of light. I think it comes down to is a challenge of getting into a routine. Here is more information: http://gardening.about.com/od/winterinthegarden/a/Poinsettia.htm (And by the way, I don’t cut mine back that severely as is indicated in the article.)

So it is a lot of bother in the fall, but I really do enjoy my poinsettias for as long as possible- having them around in the spring is as delightful as seeing the first daffodil.

    Lovely, lovely quilt.

  11. This quilt came out great, looks particularly good hanging from the black rod.

If Starbucks delivered, even if one was in my neighborhood, I'd be in big trouble!

  12. I love all your quilts too (not to mention the glimpses we get of your house). When we moved to Florida from NJ, the house we bought had a big concrete flower box right in front of a bedroom window. Covering the window completely was a HUGE poinsettia. Alas, we opted for daylight getting thru the window and the plant was removed.

  13. Such a pretty quilt! I love those stars, and Monique's fabric makes them all the more beautiful. Your miracle poinsettia just was so excited for February that she burst at the seams! LOL

  14. All good things must come to an end. Time to get a pot full of daffodils or paperwhites!
Your quilt using Monique's fabrics is so beautiful. Love the diagonal line of red centered stars across the quilt top.

  15. Such a sad story of the lonely little leaf. Shame on me for smiling at the poor thing. What a fantastic idea for appreciating our extra day. I am going to give it some thought for sure. It was nice seeing your beautiful quilt again.

I'm glad you're getting a fair amount of enjoyment from your poinsettia. It still is very pretty.

  19. Your blog was just the thing for my less than stellar day. And with a big snowstorm on the way, well, let's just say I've got a bit of the winter doldrums. But, your 'glass half full' approach to life...talking about what to do with the 'gift' of the extra day on Feb. 29...is so refreshing and delightful. No wonder I love your blog! Anyway...thanks to you, I will not waste this precious gift we're given every four years. Feb. 29 is on a Wednesday, so not sure what I'll do...but I can guarantee I will devote part of the day to something out-of-the-ordinary, something special, something to celebrate MY leap day. Thank you...and here's to Starbucks adding delivery service soon!

  20. Your tiny borders around the blocks are so perfect!

My poinsettias are dropping leaves also...I'm going to do my best to keep them going.

Love the thought of Feb. 29th as an extra day...while it is true, I just never thought of it like that. Sadly, mine will be spent at my day job but I wish you a very happy "Extra Day" and hope you are as productive as you want to be in your pjs! What fun!

  22. I was just as shocked as you to see that leaf laying on your counter! It's such a beautiful poinsettia and it seems like you've had it forever :o) I love the new quilt you've hung for February. Where did you get the quilt hanger that you have it hanging on?

  23. I love that quilt - what a perfect marriage of pattern and fabric! The cornerstones are wonderful. February 29 is a very special day at my house - my baby girl's "real" birthday!

  24. I loved this quilt while you were making it and love it finished. This line was beautiful and I love the stars. I think any line with black in it draws me in! Thanks for sharing the quilting, always fun to see!

  25. When we have the day extra it is always that my DH and me don't have 9 days between our birthdays, but 10 days. For the rest nothing planned as it will be a working day.

  26. ROFL! Yes, it is very sad. A moment of silence, please. {) (Does that look like I've got my eyes closed?)

The quilt is gorgeous, of course. And the poinsettia still looks gorgeous. But is it the Miracle Home Depot Poinsettia? Or the Home Depot Miracle Poinsettia? My only Home Depot "miracle" is getting out of that store without buying a new kitchen, a complete set of patio furniture that seats 20, a riding lawnmower (did you know I don't have a lawn?), and so on. I love that place. :)

As for February 29th... I don't know. I'm going to have to think of something special to do. I think some kind of dessert will be involved. :)

  27. After reading your comment about the extra day, I figured we all have an extra 24 hours to sew.
