I've always thought yo-yo's were cute, by themselves. I never really found a purse, pillow or other project made from yo-yo's that appealed to me. And since I didn't have a real purpose for yo-yo's, I wasn't interested in making any.
Well all that changed when I saw this vase!
Annette, at Sunshine Yellow, posted this picture. This vase is filled with 500 yo-yo's made by her mother-in-law! Isn't that the best use of a flower vase and yo-yo's that you've ever seen!
I'm now in yo-yo production mode, a perfect way to spend my evenings now that Evening Bloom is done.
I'm using the Clover Yo-Yo makers to make my yo-yo's. They come in several sizes, but for some reason, medium isn't one of them, go figure! These little gadgets are really easy to use but I'm amazed how much fabric it takes to make even a small yo-yo!
I'm starting with red yo-yo's. I know you find that shocking!
Here's my start. Once I fill this dish I plan to fill a small vase, and then move up until I have a great big vase full of red yo-yo's. If I'm not tired of yo-yo's by then, I'm moving on to scrappy yo-yo's.
The thing that amazed me about using the yo-yo maker, somehow the top raw edge of the fabric folds down perfectly, to leave a nice clean edge around the top, it's like magic!
Now since it's the "Summer of Fun" I thought it would be fun to have a little yo-yo contest, leave a comment on this blog with how many yo-yo's you think I'll have come Labor Day, September 3rd. If you're correct you'll win a layer cake of your choice. In the case of a tie, I'll draw from the winners.
Good luck and have fun!

ReplyDeleteHow long does it take to make a yoyo? If you made all those yoyos in one night, and we are almost at the end of June, I'm going to say 360 yoyos.
ReplyDeleteLove the yoyo's. Like you, I like to make them but not put them
ReplyDeleteOn things. I think you will have 603 by Labor Day!
Have
Fun.
June
oh boy what a fun way to do this
ReplyDeletenow do I need those too, I always loved those yo yo coverlets!
great way to use up some of my scraps....
hmmmm ok 785
Kathie
Thanks for reminding me of my daughter's yo yo project that she never completed. I have something to do in the car today on my 14 hour journey.
ReplyDeleteYour red yo-yo's are sure cute! My guess is 584.
ReplyDeletewell, Thelma, seeing as you NEVER do any by halves, I'm guessing you'll probably have about 1832 of those babies by September lol!
ReplyDelete1750! Sew! Sew! Sew!
ReplyDelete850 yo-yos is my guess. Have fun! I started making yo-yos for a project but then I didn't know how to sew them together so I stopped. I have a lot of circles ready in the wings to be turned into yo-yos. Maybe I'll pick that project up again.... someday.
ReplyDeleteThelma,I LOVE that vase of yo-yo's! It looks so fun and cheerful! I think you will have 406 yo-yo's done by Labor Day!
ReplyDeleteIf my count is correct you have 103 days until Labor Day. If you make 8 a night you should have 824 so that's my guess. Yo-Yos are so cute.
ReplyDeleteKnowing your love of large numbers, I guess 742.
ReplyDeleteGood luck! My guess is 1022, you might have to miss a day here and there. Your yo-yo's are so perfect. ;-> Toni Anne
ReplyDeleteMy guess is 317. I love the vase of yo-yos! What a clever idea.
ReplyDeleteMy guess is 814. I have a bunch of pink yo-yos someone gave me but dont know what to do with them, the vase seems like a good idea. I picked 814 because my new grand daughter is due August 14.
ReplyDeleteKnowing how fast you work and as someone else said "your love for large numbers", though I would say it is more your love for lots and lots of pieces in a project, AND...add to that the fact that Labor day is about three months away and I'm betting you want more than one vase filled with yoyo's, I'll guess your shooting for 1000.
ReplyDelete***Wow, that was a really long sentence, I wonder if there are any 'dangling participles' in it, LOL.
I prepared a briefing for a Lt. Colonel to present to a two star General when I was working for the Air Force, and when the Colonel did the dry run, he told me I had dangling participles...I stood up, looked behind me and brush off the back of my slacks and asked him if they were still there. Ummm, he didn't think I was funny, but the rest of the commanders did. Sorry, just had to share that with you Thelma, you know how I am. Big Hugs...
I'll say 572.
ReplyDeleteLove the idea of a vase full of yo-yos! I have a bag of pink and brown yo-yos that never made it in to anything - maybe a tall vase is in order! I will guess 612.
ReplyDeleteHi Thelma, I'm going with 1244.
ReplyDeleteI,m guessing 1717..Fun! Thanks for the chance
ReplyDeleteMary
I,m guessing 1717..Fun! Thanks for the chance
ReplyDeleteMary
My guess is 1508 How fun !
ReplyDeleteThelma,
ReplyDeleteMy guess is that you will have 600 red yo-yo's and 500 scrapy yo-yo's totalling 1,100.
JaneN
My first thought was 623 but then I read the other comments and decided it might be more. No, I'm sticking with my gut - 623 it is. LOL
ReplyDeleteI have a jar in my sewing room full of scrappy bright yo-yos I used for a contest on my blog a couple of years ago. They are very addicting. :-)
I love your red yo-yos, and see another red & white tribute in the making! I think you'll have 500 come Labor Day.
ReplyDeleteDebbie R.
I love to make yo-yo's. And this is such a cool idea. I don't think you will have any problem making 500 yo-yo's by Labor Day.
ReplyDeleteBecause you are a very productive seamstress, I will say 517...500 because that's how many my mother-in-law made and 17 because that's a lucky number around our house. I'm looking forward to seeing your vase of beautiful yo-yo's.
ReplyDelete423. That's a great idea.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! I have those Yo-yo makers too - have never used them. They are in the "tool drawer" LOLOL!
ReplyDeleteWow, that could be a heck of a lot of yo-yo's !!! If you stick with it and really crank them out, I'd say you could have about 900. But I think you might tire of them before Labor Day..... so you will probably have less than that. But I'm going to stick with 900 for my guess!
ReplyDeleteHmmmm.... unless you are really committed to using up your scraps for this project - I'm thinking you may trail off a bit... My guess is around 350. They do take quite a bit of fabric for one little circle. I have to say that they aren't my favorite either, but I haven't tried to make one yet - so I shouldn't say that. All the best!
ReplyDeleteI could see you losing interest after awhile... so my guess is 502.
ReplyDeleteThese things can take over your life, so I'll say about 743. They do look lovely in the vase.
ReplyDeleteWow, I want to guess 1444, don't know why but think you'll do at least a 1,000 probably more :)
ReplyDeleteWonderful project! I have a bunch of yo yo's somewhere too. I say you will have 653?
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Donna
I'm guessing 592, so when you get that many made, please stop so that I win. :)
ReplyDeleteHmmm, you blogged about other Summer projects along with the yo-yo's. So I'm thinking about 128, but hope I am wrong, and you are able to crank them out!
ReplyDeleteInteresting....they're really pretty and I'm guessing you'll have 944 by Labor Day. Good Luck!
ReplyDeleteI'm going to guess 396 :)
ReplyDeleteI think you'll make around 752! Sounds like a fun summer project!
ReplyDeleteI am going to guess 243. Love the red..
ReplyDeleteI'm going to guess around 650 yo-yo's made by Labor Day. Thanks for sharing the picture of the vase. Almost makes me want to start my own collection.
ReplyDeletecindy
I am going to guess 1244 yo yo's. Though you nay tire of them before then.
ReplyDeleteim going to say 900
ReplyDeleteI say 776. Maybe it's all the red and the 4th of July coming? Sue in MN
ReplyDeleteMy guess is 453, for no particular reason. It just popped into my head. : )
ReplyDeleteMy guess is 999, have fun making all those little cuties
ReplyDeleteI'll guess 871.
ReplyDeleteNo idea when Labour Day is so I will have a stab at 487!
ReplyDeleteMy first thought was 777 yoyo's, so I'll stick to that. They really are gorgeous. I have some yoyo's's laying around, maybe I should make some more. I really like the vase full of yoyo's, maybe a little one?
ReplyDeleteGreat idea on displaying your yo yo's. I always thought a quilt with them could only be for show as it would be too bumpy for comfort! I will guess 952 yo yo's. Have fun!
ReplyDeleteYo Yo's are fun to make even without a yo yo maker. Have fun! My guess is 560 yo yo's by the end of summer.
ReplyDeleteMaureen B.

ReplyDeleteYo-Yo's haven't appealed to me, but they sure do look cute in the vase. My guess is 898:)
ReplyDeleteWell, I previously taught math...so I started all kinds of calculations to figure out your total of Yo Yos. That got me close and then I started thinking of my mom who passed in 1999 and her birthday was August 13th......so that is what led me to my final guess....813 yo yos by Sept 3rd. Thanks for the opportunity in your giveaway, but another chance to think of my mom. She was making yo yos in the year prior to her passing. I love memories of my mom. Kristy soardkg@fuse.net
ReplyDeleteMy guess is 785 yo yo's by Labor Day. I am looking forward to your review of gadgets, etc.

I love the idea and when I have the TIME I join you. But TIME is the magic word and we are always short of it. So I think it will be 332 Yo-yo's you would have made. Good luck and have fun making them.
ReplyDeleteKind regards,
Marga♥
Love your creations! Makes me think outside the box. I think you will do 501...just to beat the record of the vase in your post!!
ReplyDeleteLabor Day is my oldest son's birthday. It was kind of unique going in labor with him on Labor Day!
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing 628. Hope you have fun!
Knowing you, you'll have many more done then I could ever attempt. My guess will be 976, which would be alot of yo-yos in my books.
ReplyDeleteLove the idea, and displaying as you go with smaller vases! I have an antique glass rolling pin filled with Ruby leftover triangles that I enjoy seeing every day. My guess is 532 because it is more than the 500, but really, at some point, you have to get tired of making yo-yos! I love your Summer of Fun theme - I think I'll adopt it too! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteWow - what a challenge you have given yourself - not sure I've found the passion for them enough to fill a whole vase - but I can't say never as I'm sure I'll make a bunch one day - I saw a really cool american flag made from them. But for my guess on what you will do - well from reading your blog you go all out - not sure I'd wish you to make over 1000. So I'm gonna guess 778.
ReplyDeleteCute little yo yo's! I am going to guess 350 but I bet you do more!
ReplyDeleteI will guess 283, enjoy your blog.
ReplyDeleteMine is www.nipntuckquilting.blogspot.com
How about 720? I based it on you did 8 in one night, there are 90 days of summer, so if you average that each day - voila, 720!
ReplyDeleteGood luck!
Thelma, You can do this. How about 1010 yo yos.
