I'm sticking with it

Finally, some real progress to report! One of my favorite quilting quotes is, "Quilts take a long time, when you don't work on them".  And some quilts take a long time when you do work on them.  I don't get hours of uninterrupted sewing time very often, but I'm making the most of the time I have this week.

My sashing was a breeze to piece.  Even with making sure all my grapes were hanging down.
(see that sunshine in this picture, the sun is back, for two straight days now!)

Ok, so I'm still feeling a little uncomfortable with all that sashing action surrounding those serene lily blocks, but it's not unusual for me to take awhile to warm up to things so I'm sticking with it.

It's also not unusual for me to fall in and out of love with a project as I progress, so I'm sticking with it.

It did just occur to me that my browns are darker than the browns on the pattern cover, maybe that's another reason they look so busy to me, but I'm sticking with it!

I got a couple of notes from folks about an antique Carolina Lily quilt Bonnie Hunter at Quiltville saw in an antique shop in  Maine.  It's a wonderful quilt and the green stem and leaf fabric has faded to an interesting shade of gray while the yellow and red pieces look as good as ever.  I'm attaching a link for you to check it out but I'm warning you, this is one of those blogs with commercials and advertisements everywhere, it takes forever to load a page. click here  I can't decided if I care if some of my quilts end up in a flea market or antique shop, better than the landfill I suppose, it sometimes makes me a little sad that these wonderful old quilts are not being enjoyed by the family they belong to.  Every quilt deserves a good home, I feel the same way about dogs, it's a wonder my house isn't full of antique quilts and puppies.

  1. "BEAUTIFUL" ....love the sashing with the blocks and it looks like they pop up the Lilys! Hope you find that comfort spot as this is a very beautiful quilt.
Everyone should have a comfort quilt of their own. I do get very attached to mine and love when someone wants them, but when gone they are out of my control and I would be sad if "abused"...

  2. Your quilt is going to be lovely in my humble opinion.
I suppose quilts are better off going to an unrelated person who loves them and uses them (via a flea market if need be) than unloved in a loft or cupboard of the family of the original owner/maker

  5. Yes, it does tug at your heartstrings a bit when you see a family piece that is isn't family-owned.

We all just have different ideas of what is precious to us. I do not have room for the antique quilts no matter how much I love them. But I have three adopted puppies. :)

  6. I think I agree with your first commenter. Something about your sashing makes those lily blocks really stand out. The darker fabrics also give the quilt a more primitive style look, which I like. Great job!

  12. I love your quilt with the sashing. I know what you mean about falling in and out of love with a quilt while working on it. It happens to me all the time. The last quilt I made, I was so close to taking it off the frame and stomping on it! Glad I didn't, now I really love it :-) LOL!! Oh, I love that quilt quote too LOL :-)

  15. Not a good feeling - being unsure half way through is it? I have been there too. It is busier with this sashing but busy can be so good. It will be really lovely finished - and more vintage, as you say. Keep up the great work!

  16. I like the slightly darker brown. The contrast helps the lilies stand out a little more.

  19. Hi Thelma,
I'm like you and I often wonder about liking the finished project as I go along. I think what you are doing is going to be great. From here, it looks wonderful and I like your browns. I have been wanting to do the 3 Barns, but am still stuck with that sashing......

  20. Thelma, it is going to be beautiful and I'm just betting when you get it finished and quilted you will be totally in love with it. Have you thought about what kind of quilting you will want done on it? Also, I feel just like you do about unloved quilts and unwanted animals, I would probably turn have quilts stacked to the ceiling and dogs and cats everywhere if I could! Hugs...

  21. Love the colors you choose! Stickin with it will end up in a real treasure! Not to be found in a shop somewhere.
I too have to wonder what will become of my quilts. My boys have no interest... :-0

  22. I like the darker color in the sashing - it is "pre" antiqued!! What a pain to make sure those grapes are all the same direction!! I think we all often fall in and out of love of what we are working on, especially when it's a large project. Some times the ugliest (is there one??) quilts are over whelmingly beautiful once it is quilted. You can always send it my way *wink!!!!

  23. I love the addition of the sashing. I can see your point that it adds to the business of the quilt, but I think it's a nice diversion from all the lilies which are so strong. I hope my family will want my quilts too, but better they are found in an antique store by a collector or lover, than lining someone's dog bed or car boot!
