Jersey Girl to California Girl . . .

When my favorite daughter was home for Christmas (I'm always amazed when parents say they don't have a favorite child, my California daughter is my favorite child by far) in addition to going home with   her Christmas haul and my French Vintage quilt (LQ#80 ) she also tried to talk me out of my Chicken Feed quilt (LQ#119).  I was having no part of that, Chicken Feed looks too perfect on the red couch to be moving to California.  While my daughter did love the bright American Jane colors of Chicken Feed, I think what she liked best was its size, which is 45" x 45".  She said it was just the perfect size to have on her lap.  So when Sherri and Sinta selected Jersey Girl for the January Schnibbles sew-along I immediately thought that it had the potential to be a perfect lap quilt for my daughter.

Turns out it does make a perfect lap size quilt!

Carrie's pattern finished at 36" x 36" so I made my version a tad bigger to be closer in size to the Chicken Feed quilt my daughter liked.  I added a half inch to each block in the pattern, bumped up the sashing a smidgen, and added an inner border to get a quilt that finished at 50" x 50".

Since this quilt is going to be living with my daughter at her house I've renamed my top California Girl.

This is Lifetime Quilt Number 124.
The pattern is Jersey Girl by Carrie Nelson for Miss Rosie's Quilt Co.
It finished at 50" x  50"
The majority of the fabric is Scrumptious by Bonnie and Camille for Moda.
It has approximately 525 pieces.

Sinta and Sherri are extending the January sew along date to February 3rd, so if you've not made your Jersey Girl yet get your pattern (click here) and get to it.   You can easily make this pattern in a weekend, what else do you have to do while waiting for the Super Bowl to start!

My California Girl looks mighty fine on the red couch too, I hope it finds its way to California!

Housekeeping Items:

I got a few questions about my pattern binders, I blogged about them here.  Although at that time I only had 4 binders, it appears as if I add a binder a year, but you get the general idea on my set up.

There's a Gypsy Kisses Instagram sew-along in the works and I'm hoping to join in, several folks left comments about wanting to make a pickle dish quilt so I thought I would pass the information on to you.  Follow Jennifer Fortuna at jennfortuna if you want to follow along or join in the fun.

One last thing, I only have one child, but I just know if I had more than one she would be my favorite!

  1. Welcome back. I suspected you were up to something fun. I thought you might have gone to the quilt show last week. Funny you mention favorites, even if it was tongue in cheek. I was just having this conversation with my parents. I was telling them that I didn't get how people with more than one child would never say they have a favorite when with their actions it was clear who that favorite was. Never to imply you love one more than the other, but definitely LIKE one more than the other just because you might share similar views or hobbies or even time shared together is more frequent. Dad agreed that there is always one you share more with but my mom could not accept it. My daughter is my favorite too! I can say that since I only have her too. She was up here last week for a quilty retreat. I need to get back to my blog soon. Way to many things to share.
    :)

  4. Thelma, that is too funny about your daughter talking you out of quilts. I thought my daughters were the only ones :) Sometimes I barely get the fabric bought and they have it spoken for. That's OK if get the most enjoyment out of sewing the project. I love your California Girl quilt top - so very cheerful! Your such an inspiration! Anne

  6. I admired your CA Girl when I saw it on Instagram; it is even better on a bigger screen. You are too funny about the favorite daughter thing. We are always telling our (only) daughter she is our favorite child but she just rolls her eyes.

  9. Whew Thelma! I though at the beginning of your post..."I hope her other children do not read this blog"... I'm relieved :)

I love your "California Girl" and I'm sure it will be well received by the favorite child :)

  15. I thought that you only had one daughter, because I do, too. But just like you, I know she would be my favorite, too! I also feel as though along the way I got the idea that you live in Indiana. That is where my daughter lives! I wish I was closer to her.

  16. I almost fell off the couch when I read the favorite child comments LOL!! Too funny! I tell my two boys that they are either my favorite college student or my favorite eighth grader, depending on which one it is of course :-) being that I only have one of each, that makes them laugh. Or at least they pretend to laugh LOL! I was just about to turn off the iPad and get the border on my Jersey Girl, but it looks like I have more time :-) WooHoo! Your version is adorable! I love it! I like it more than mine LOL! That's true!

  17. Auntia is my favorite and i DO have another daughter ... but it's all her fault cuz she is so doggone awesome ... as a matter of fact, i have a favorite son, too (he is the one who has NEVER forgotten my birthday, even though he is just as busy as the Other One) ... but i guess i'd better not post any of that on my blog, just in case one of the Not Chosen Two might actually take the time to READ it...

i have a favorite grandchild, too - which is REALLY against The Rules ... i just can't seem to help it, though cuz she is such an awesome little girl...

love California Girl - i might have to make one for my Colorado Girl ... and for my Little Colorado Girl ... might as well be in Even Deeper DooDoo, right?!?

  19. Love, love, love your California Girl!! Your daughter will be awestruck and love it too! I am also an only child, so my mother always says "favorite daughter" and "favorite son-in-law" about my hubby. So cute.

LOL at Dianne's comments above! Ha ha ha -- yes, she will be "in Even Deeper DooDoo" Maybe we need to coin a phrase after that?!

  22. Your Jersey Girl looks great in Scrumptious and I love the addition of the inner border. Every month when I see the other quilts, I find I want to make the quilt again and again using other fabric choices, If I did, yours would be one of them!

  23. I have three children and I feel differently about them all. But equally.

I have made ONE quilt in my life - a very simple one. I saw your CG one and thought... ooh, maybe I could do that. Then I saw that it had 500+ pieces. Maybe not. It's lovely, though!

  24. I know she believes you... but thankfully, she will never know for sure! ha!

I actually did the same thing with my JG. But I was prompted by having 2 1/2" leftover HST's from another project. Which led to enlarging the block and the sashing and borders.
Did I mention that I love your happy CG version?
