Otis, not THAT Otis!

When I hear the name Otis I immediately think of Otis Campbell, the town drunk on Mayberry, a TV show from the 60s.  I know Carrie Nelson sometimes comes up with odd names for her quilts, but I sure couldn't figure out how such a beautiful quilt pattern could be named after a town drunk!  Turns out it's not, this Otis is for Otis Redding, the singer songwriter who likes to sit on the dock of the bay.  I'm still not sure what that has to do with this quilt, but then no one asked me, and honestly I can't come up with a better name, so Otis it is.

This is Lifetime Quilt Number 153
The fabric is For You by Zen Chic for Moda
It finished at 76" x 76"
It has approximately 1,210 pieces.
The pattern is Otis by Carrie Nelson for Miss Rosie's Quilt Company.

Both the pattern and fabric are now available in shops near you or your fingertips.  For some reason this line of fabric did not get a lot of buzz at Spring Market, I don't know why, it is wonderful!  So wonderful you better go get some right now, you'll be disappointed if you don't.  The fabric looks great as a family but will also blend well with other fabrics.  You can make Otis from a For You fat eighth bundle.  But get the Fat Quarter Bundle, then you'll have leftovers!

  1. Great quilt! You're right I hadn't heard of this line and I love it. I always gravitate toward blue/green combination fabrics and this has some great ones!

  3. Wow! Love both the quilt and pattern. I had seen them both and had them on my "list". I had not seen the information on your link. I really enjoy your blog. Thanks so much for sharing.

  5. Beautiful quilt! I also think of Otis Campbell any time I hear the name Otis. In fact I named my little yorkie Otis after Otis Campbell. My husband thinks the name is too common so he call the dog Sir Otis.

  6. I love this version of the quilt! I recently bought this pattern but haven't decided on what fabric to use. I'm thinking of using a small print or a color for the background.

  7. It's lovely. I have always wanted to piece and Ocean Waves quilt. Now that Carrie has put that block into Otis, that desire will become reality! Her directions are spot on and easy to follow. (So the name Otis does kinda make sense - Sitting on the Dock of the Bay, which leads into Ocean Waves...)

  8. Gorgeous, in a Carrie style that can't be beat! The fabrics are great... and did you know that Sitting on the Dock of the Bay didn't become a hit until after Otis Redding died? The only other song that became a hit after a songwriter made it was by Janis Joplin Me and Bobbie Magee.

  9. How quick you are ! I can't believe that you work just one day a week - if I remember what you wrote several years ago on your blog -
I love this quilt and I am longing to make it, as soon as I'll get the gorgeous For You fabrics because the pattern deserves that colors.
