Moving On

I'm finally up to date on piecing my quilt top backings, all eleven of them!!

Yes Eleven.  I have no idea how I got so far behind, but that's never going to happen again.

If I have my backing fabric when I finish a top, I'll usually piece the back then, I need to do a better job of thinking about the backing as I'm piecing my top, get it ordered and get it done.  Several of you mentioned 108" wide backings.  The last time I used wide backing fabric I didn't like the feel of the fabric, but that was ages ago, maybe they've improved, I"ll give it another go.

While piecing all those backs I was thinking about my Village project.  I've decided to use scraps to build my Village.

I studied the pattern and have placed a post-it note with the cutting requirements on my cutting table. When I'm working on a project I'll try to cut a few pieces as I go, and maybe piece a few houses too.

Here's my start!

Now that I don't have those backings hanging over my head I'm ready to start a new project, guilt free!

  1. I can see a very nice village starting and it looks very cheery. I do like your idea of doing as you go along Thelma and that way there will be many homes gathered by the time you go thru the year. Also a nice way to use some of the scraps!

  2. Kudos for getting all those backings done. That's where I stall on the quilt's progress. I have used the 108" backings and they're convenient but they feel really thick. I thought it was just me. Love your plan for the houses. You go, girl!

  4. Yay for you! The little houses look great. And I agree about the feel of the 108" fabric. Not sure if it's changed or not.

  6. you inspired me to take a look at my backs too. I need five. Yikes. But what a wonderful feeling to know that you can push ahead, conscience-clear, into new quilty territories! I know what you mean about the 108" textures. I think that they have improved.

  7. I'm glad I won't have to pay your quilting bill!! There are varying qualities of wide backings, for sure.

  11. I don't care for the wide backing fabric either. For some reason it isn't woven the same as the regular fabric. The thread count is much less. I always piece my backs with regular fabric.

  12. Amazing! You deserve some sort of a special treat for all that work. Do you also quilt all of your quilts?

  13. Fantastic! I envy that you're caught up with all the backing so, I wish I were. This just might be the boot in the butt I need. Thanks! I LOVE the house blocks, what is the name of the pattern? I have buckets and piles of scraps that would love to be a quilt someday, the houses would be perfect. Thanks for letting us have a peek. Toni Anne ;->

  14. I buy the 108" backing so so i don't have to bother piecing them. Well, that doesn't mean that they get quilted either. Keep piecing your backings- it uses up old fabric so you can buy more. I need to start piecing as I need to reduce my evergrowing inventory.

  15. Thelma, I enjoyed your post because I can SOOO relate to it. I have 12 quilts that need basted for quilting and I have two basted that are ready to quilt. I was hoping I could quilt 1-2 a month and get those babies done.

I too like to piece and cut as I go. Cut a few, sew a few. I think too much cutting bores me.

As for quilt backs, the reason many of my quilts are not quilted is because I either don't have backs for them or I just have not taken the time to seam the backs.

  16. I like to piece my backing as I can usually put a strip of left over blocks right down the middle or across the top. I'd love to see your little post it of the cutting sizes for the houses maybe I'll use my scraps up the same way. The houses are so cute! mburnette912@bellsouth.net

  17. Wow! That's a lot of backings! Many of the 108" backings are very nice these days but are getting more expensive every day (I work at a quilt shop).
