At my house, summer ends Labor Day weekend, which gives me just a few more hours to make 800 yo-yos before the deadline on my Summer of Fun. One deadline I'm not going to miss is making a cover for my sewing machine. It was close, and even though the pattern was called, Start Today, Finish Tomorrow, it took me three days to make my cover.
I got the idea of a cover for my sewing machine when I saw this pattern in the August issue of American Patchwork and Quilting. The pattern is by Monique Dillard of Open Gate Quilts.
The main reason it took me all summer to make my cover is that I couldn't decide on my fabric, but when I was out in Washington I saw some Lucy's Crab Shack by Sweetwater for Moda and knew that it was just what I needed. I had seen this family of fabric online, but for some reason I was always distracted by the dark gray fabrics in that line, but once I was able to see the full line in person, and could ignore the gray, I knew it would look great in my sewing room.
My sewing machine is longer and shorter than the one in the pattern. Instructions for tailoring the size of your cover for your machine are included in the pattern, but mine came out too large the first try, but just right the second.
The extra day was spent quilting all those sides. I went with a simple horizontal and vertical one inch in width design. I don't quilt things very often, but every time I do, I'm always amazed how much time it eats up. I left the backside plain, but think it looks just fine.
Here it is, on my machine,
a perfect fit, as long as my sewing machine is in this table!
So when that cover is not on my machine, which is pretty much all day long, I keep it hanging in my sewing room closet.
And even though this cover is only on my machine at the end of the day, I have to admit to peeking in my sewing room before I go to bed and as soon as I get up, just to see that cover. I think it was worth three days of my sewing time.
