Hallowe'en 1904 . . .

All Done!

I think that simple black and orange strip border is the perfect touch.

This is Lifetime Quilt Number 96.
The pattern is Hallowe'en 1904 by Blackbird Designs.
I purchased the fabric as a kit at the Buggy Barn and added a few of  my own pieces. ( Buggy Barn has since sold out of the kits)
I used the Buggy Barn method to piece the stars
This quilt has approximately 1,501 pieces.
It's big and beautiful, this quilt finished at 90" x 90".

I love how this quilt turned out, I loved piecing every block, and I'm thrilled to discover I'm a capable machine appliquér.  That "C"/Moon block was a little scary but I'm happy we all agree the owl block was an improvement.  This is a very good beginner appliqué  project.  The pieces are large and easy to work with. The pattern instructions assume you are not a beginner so keep that in mind.  I think this project would look great in brown and orange too, for more of a fall feel instead of Halloween feel.  You've got 11 months to collect fabric before you start piecing your top next October, don't you want your own Hallowe'en 1904?

Sewing along with Nicole at Sister's Choice made this an extra fun project for me.  I think Nicole is almost done with her version too.  Be sure to check it out.  So Nicole, what's next, I'm always up for a sew-along with you.

What's a Halloween without Garfield Cooper?

Trick or Treat!

  10. I think Cooper might upstage your 1904 just a little....... but really?? you made him into a cat? LOL!!! I made my maltese (white) a black cat one year also - LOL!!!
1904 is wonderful!! I will do mine during the year, in fact hope to get several Blackbirds under my wing this year. Love your changes- most especially the way you did the pieced stars. Mr. Owl looks rather smart reigning over the entire quilt. Did the pattern not call for the piano key border? I'll have to take a look. Do you have a special back for it?
    Great job!!

  12. Hi Thelma ... this is absolutely stunning! I love Halloween and would love to make this quilt one day. Would you happen to know which fabrics you used (particularly the oranges)?

    1. I added the oranges from Seasonal Gatherings by Primitive Gatherings for Moda, and some Minick and Simpson Halloween fabric that was 2 or 3 years old. The rest was part of a kit, I have no idea what lines they were.

  23. I had seen this quilt in the past but until Nicole posted the picture of the sample @ the Buggy Barn shop, I had not fallen for it. Too Halloweenie. But the sample was just too beautiful to ignore. I am definitely in love. I have added a few more oranges to my kit as well but I decided to wait until my January retreat to start my project. My daughter is joining me and I'm going to show her machine applique.
You version is just as beautiful and if I was not already in love, I would have fallen seeing this. That owl turned out to be a success. Outstanding addition. I love how both you and Nicole took this quilt and made it your own.
BTW: Saw Paula Barnes at market and she says Hi!

  27. I think it's s great basic quilt pattern. You could just do the star blocks and make it patriotic. Make it in red, green, and gold for Christmas with trees and other Christmas-y appliques.
