A Funny Thing Happened . . . .

A funny thing happened on the way home from  Sinta and Sherri's Schnibbles parade, I found out I was RIGHT  ish!

When I blogged about my Hubbel/Hubble finish this summer, someone left a comment asking if I had noticed that my center hsts were turned the wrong way.  WHAT!!  I was on vacation and couldn't really do much research on the matter, but let me tell ya', I was bummed the rest of the day.  "How did I make that mistake", I kept asking and asking myself over and over.  I remembered being very careful when laying out my blocks and following the pattern diagram to the letter, or so I thought.  By the time I got home from vacation I had moved on, kind of.

Not moved on enough to enter my Hubble/Hubbel in The Parade, or to post a picture of it once it was home from the quilter.  But I decided I liked my Hubble/Hubbel, even if it was WRONG!  Now I'm guessing at this point some of you are wondering why those turned hsts were bothering me, me the queen of "Lets Change a Pattern".  Changes that are my idea are grand, changes that are an accident are not.

What I didn't know at the time but have since found out,  this pattern is a twofer, buy one get another free!  You can make the Hubble on the cover OR the Hubble in the pattern diagram.  I think it's interesting that in the parade about half of us are pattern followers, and used the pattern diagram, and the other half looked at the pattern cover, probably didn't read single word of the pattern, and made that version.

Here's my Hubble using the pattern diagram.

Here's the cover.

It's the center hsts that are different.

Boy does it feel good to have that cleared up!  Hey Sinta and Sherri, is it too late to make the parade?

  2. Thelma, Sue and I noticed that and had a loooong conversation over it at retreat about who was reading rhe pattern properly. I wrote Carrie about it and she told me she did not notice the discrepancy in the pattern. It was not intentional... Sue was following the photo while I find it easier to follow the b/w diagram. That was what lead to our discovering the differences. Your name came up in the discussion because I thought I remembered a word or two about it on your blog, but couldn't find it when I went back to look. Conclusion: not right, not wrong...just different.

  3. I was wondering the same thing about my own Hubble! I noticed a difference between mine and many if the others in the parade. I looked the pattern cover and I saw that it looked just like mine. I just figured that others had decided to get more creative with it. I didn't look into it any more. Thanks for clearing that up! How lucky are we to have so many versions of the same pattern! Lots of options :-)

  5. Well, I remember the post where someone mentioned your HST being turned wrong (but I don't think she used those exact words), anyway, I haven't made Hubble and I don't have the pattern, but I sat that day and studied picture and just couldn't find anything amiss. Now if I'd looked at a pattern, I would have seen a "difference", and assummed it was a "Thelma change" to give the center more definition. I actually preferred the way your center is done. It just feels ... right! But really, like Susan said...'Are there any wrong quilts?" Big Hugs...

  6. Looks fabulous to me! I never noticed a difference. I don't have my contacts in yet, and I really don't see it....

  7. Wow! Thanks for sharing this! I noticed the differences but never thought to look at the pattern cover!

We will definitely add you to the parade!

  10. Thelma, I didn't think it's right or wrong, just unique, different and really "so Thelma". I love that you are able to take a pattern and make it uniquely yours by tweaking it with a twist here or there, changing the sizes in parts of it or pulling in an altogether different pattern and adding another interesting element within. I still love your basket quilt with the lattice borders and your Eventide quilt. All of your quilts come out so beautiful. Sorry too that I made you feel so bad about it with me being one of the ones noticing the difference when you first showed it. I think it's a curse I have to notice the little details with items like that. Sometimes like you, they bug me until I can figure it out. Must be the accounting side of me needing the nuts and bolts of something coming out just right. If it doesn't add up it actually becomes a personal challenge just like a dog with a bone. lol

You actually are an inspiration. I have told DH and my Mom that by next summer, I'd love to have 2 shelves open in my sewing room to have a place to keep my current WIP parts in and neatly available like you do. I'm working on it, but not sure I'll make it. Wish me luck.

  11. I see the difference, but does it matter? Both finishes are great, and the designer let the buyer make the choice... even if the buyer wasn't aware a choice could be made! Love the bright colors you used!

  12. Boy, I had to enlarge your photos and go back and forth to examine the position of the HST's. I am sure that I am a go by the picture kind of person... but read if I really must. Your Hubble/Hubbel is a great grand finale` to the parade Thelma!!!

  13. Now that you mention it, I can see the difference. However, when you originally posted the completed quilt, my first impression was "Wow!! Beautiful quilt but look at all those HST." I'm a bit challenged when making them and joining them so that the points are not cut off.

It is a gorgeous quilt, Thelma.

  14. If you didn't mention it, I would not have noticed. Either way is a beauty. I think the pattern is very forgiving and as long as you are consistent with your HST directions, you are good to go. :)

  15. Earlier today when I left a comment about the different versions of Hubble, I neglected to mention how much I loved your fabric choices! Brilliant! Lovely Hubble Thelma :-)

  18. I saw the parade and didn't notice anything different about yours at all. I've come back to this post several times and it has honestly taken me quite some time to figure it out. It's not noticeable at all! I'm so sorry to hear you were bummed and felt like you made a mistake.

  19. I didn't even notice that it was different than the picture and I think it's beautiful no matter which way you made it!

  20. Took me awhile to see the difference as I kept looking at the center block. I like changing up patterns too and think they both look great. Too bad you missed the parade though.
