First Finish

My first finish and one 2016 goal met.

This is Lifetime Quilt Number 171
The pattern is Snapshots by the Fat Quarter Shop
The fabric is Daysail by Bonnie and Camille for Moda
It finished at 66" x 88"
It has approximately 653 pieces.

It even has a cute back!

I enjoyed piecing every block, the fact that is was a fundraiser for St Jude Children's Hospital was an added bonus.  Over $40,000 was raised.  Kits, backing sets, and patterns are still available.

Fat Quarter Shop is starting a new quilt along for 2016 to benefit the March of Dimes, it's called Crossroads, details here.

I love a good BOM,  the blocks usually take an afternoon and are a nice diversion from whatever I'm currently working on in m y sewing room.  Who doesn't have a spare afternoon one day a month? The problem I'm having this year is the number of monthly BOM's to choose from.  Quilt shops, pattern/fabric designers, bloggers, and instagramers are offering a myriad of blocks and styles.  So far I can't seem to make up my mind, maybe I'll just make up my own.

Thanks so much for leaving your goal comments on my last blog post.  Julie was the winner of the gift certificate with this comment,

" I am determined to make Home for the Holidays, by Primitive Gatherings. To help keep me motivated, I'm sewing along with a group on Instagram. All of the wool blocks are prepped and it's time to stitch! Happy New Year!"

Good Luck Julie, you sound determined and sewing with friends always helps me stay on track!

Let's revisit how we're all doing with our projects, UFO's, and plans in a couple of months!

Snapshots - Final Block - A Walk in the Park

Are you ready for a new Snapshots block?  It's that time again!!  Plus it's the last block, I can't believe we're at the end!

This month's block is A Walk in the Park, my latest favorite.

This block is very easy and goes together quickly.  I made my block exactly like the pattern except for the beverage in the glass.

I am thrilled that the FQS has already surpassed it's initial goal of raising $10,000 for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and its new goal of $20,000. The last time I checked the amount raised was over $36,359, how great is that!  As a reminder, the monthly patterns are a free download, a donation is up to you, the suggested donation is $5.  Here is a link to the pattern, instructional video, donation page, and everything else you need to know.  (click here)  The backing and finishing directions are also available.

Here are a few more folks participating in the sew along, be sure to check out their blocks.

For auction details click here.

Thanks for following along, I've enjoyed each block and can hardly wait to have my top all done, hopefully by the first of the year!

Snapshots - Sail Away

Are you ready for a new Snapshots block?  It's that time again!!

This month's block is Sail Away, my latest favorite.

This block is very easy and goes together quickly, there are only 16 pieces.  It took me a little over a hour start to finish.  I made my block exactly like the pattern, I thought it was perfect as is.

I am thrilled that the FQS has already surpassed it's initial goal of raising $10,000 for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and its new goal of $20,000. The last time I checked the amount raised was over $34,900, how great is that!  As a reminder, the monthly patterns are a free download, a donation is up to you, the suggested donation is $5.  Here is a link to the pattern, instructional video, donation page, and everything else you need to know.  (click here)  The backing and finishing directions are also available.

Are you Going Surfing', I am!

Are you ready for a new Snapshots block?  It's that time again!!

This month's block is Going Surfin', my latest favorite.

This block is very easy and goes together quickly.  I made my block exactly like the pattern except for the surfboard fabric.

Oh, and some fish managed to find their way into my car.  I don't have much in the way of novelty fabric, and I wanted someone in the car, dogs being my first choice, but given my limited stash I could choose fish, elephants or sheep.  Fish won.

Every month a few quilters get very clever with their fabric choices, this block has several opportunities for originality.  Although if I could choose any fabric I wanted for the car, I would have chosen the red polkadot.

I am thrilled that the FQS has already surpassed it's initial goal of raising $10,000 for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and its new goal of $20,000. The last time I checked the amount raised was over $33,000, how great is that!  As a reminder, the monthly patterns are a free download, a donation is up to you, the suggested donation is $5.  Here is a link to the pattern, instructional video, donation page, and everything else you need to know.  (click here)  The backing and finishing directions are also now available.

Fat Quarter Shop Snapshots Quilt Along - Block 9 - Quilty Cat

Are you ready for a new Snapshots block?  It's that time again!!

This month's block is Quilty Cat, my latest favorite.  At the beginning of this sew along I would have thought I would be saying my least favorite, but now that this block is done, I really do like it, even if my house is a dog house.  Funny story, when I first looked at the pattern I thought this block was called Grumpy Cat, which I thought was hilarious.  But it's Quilty Cat, a more appropriate but less entertaining name.

This block is very easy and goes together quickly.  It only has 35 pieces.  I finished this block in less than two hours, start to finish!  I made my block exactly like the pattern except for swapping the navy  sailboat print for the navy circle print. I still need to add some eyes, I'm going to attach some fabric eyes now, instead of adding button eyes later.

Here's a picture of how I trimmed the scrappy blue quilt unit block.

I found it easier to trim with the block set on point and ruler straight as opposed to running the ruler diagonally as shown in the pattern.

Here are all my pieced blocks.

So about this time during a sew along it's so easy to fall behind, lose interest, or even drop out.  If you're behind a block or two at least piece Quilty Cat this month!  Maybe that will motivate you to finish some of the other blocks, and if not, you'll at least have one more block pieced.  Just because you've missed a couple of blocks don't think you have to wait to piece this fun and easy kitty.  I've enjoyed sewing each block each month, but I have a deadline to blog about the latest block, congratulations to those of you who have also pieced your blocks right along with me! We only have 3 more blocks to go!

I am thrilled that the FQS has already surpassed it's initial goal of raising $10,000 for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and its new goal of $20,000. The last time I checked the amount raised was over $31,189, how great is that!  As a reminder, the monthly patterns are a free download, a donation is up to you, the suggested donation is $5.  Here is a link to the pattern, instructional video, donation page, and everything else you need to know.  (click here)  The backing and finishing directions are also now available.

Fat Quarter Shop Snapshots Sew Along - Month 8 - Like Riding a Bike

Are you ready for a new Snapshots block?  It's that time again!!

This month's block is Like Riding a Bike, my latest favorite.

I used Daysail fabric, but chose different prints than what is listed in the pattern.  This block took twice as long as the rest of the blocks I've pieced so far, it has nearly 80 pieces.  It's not hard, but don't think you'll finish it up in a couple of hours, you'll need a long afternoon if you plan to make it start to finish.  Maybe cutting the pieces one day and piecing it the next would be a good plan if you're rushed for time. But either way, it's time well spent, I think this bike is too cute for words.

I've not shared a picture of all my blocks in ages, so here they are.

Note to self, use more navy blue in future blocks!

I am thrilled that the FQS has already surpassed it's initial goal of raising $10,000 for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and its new goal of $20,000. The last time I checked the amount raised was over $29,500, we're so close to $30,000, how great is that!  As a reminder, the monthly patterns are a free download, a donation is up to you, the suggested donation is $5.  Here is a link to the pattern, instructional video, donation page, and everything else you need to know.  (click here)  The backing and finishing directions are also now available.

Snapshots Sew Along - Month 7 - Up, Up and Away

Are you ready for a new Snapshots block?  It's that time again!!  The months are just flying by, we're over half way there.

This month's block is Up, Up and Away, my latest favorite.

I used Daysail fabric, but chose different prints than what is listed in the pattern.  My puppy block has a lot of navy blue, and that was the only block with navy blue, so for some balance I went heavy on the navy for this block.  This block is a breeze (get it balloon, breeze, lol) to piece, really.  Start to finish I think it only took me two hours.  The background is the traditional white, but I took this picture on a rainy day so it looks more tan.

I also pieced the camera block that goes on the back of the quilt.  It's in the backing pattern that is currently available.

I love this block so much I'm thinking of adding it to the front in place of one of the other blocks, (hint, meow).  I went with some navy fabric for this block too, but it's all Daysail.

I am thrilled that the FQS has already surpassed it's initial goal of raising $10,000 for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and its new goal of $20,000. The last time I checked the amount raised was over $28,000. Great job, give yourself a pat on the back!  As a reminder, the monthly patterns are a free download, a donation is up to you, the suggested donation is $5.  Here is a link to the pattern, instructional video, donation page, and everything else you need to know.  (click here)  The backing and finishing directions are also available now.

Snapshots Block 6 - Triple Scoop Sundae

Are you ready for a new Snapshots block?  It's that time again!!  The months are just flying by, we're half way there.

This month's block is Triple Scoop Sundae, my latest favorite.

I made a few changes to my block.  I used a different Bonnie and Camille family of fabric for the ice cream scoops, I used Hello Darling.   The rest of the fabric is from Day Sail, but I chose different pieces for the ice cream dish.

This block is not hard, but I did make one mistake when adding the background corners to the ice cream scoops, so take your time, double check and pay close attention.

I am thrilled that the FQS has already surpassed it's initial goal of raising $10,000 for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and its new goal of $20,000. The last time I checked the amount raised was over $26,000. Great job, give yourself a pat on the back!  As a reminder, the monthly patterns are a free download, a donation is up to you, the suggested donation is $5.  Here is a link to the pattern, instructional video, donation page, and everything else you need to know.  (click here)  The backing and finishing directions are also available this month.

Snapshots Time! Block 5!

Are you ready for a new Snapshots block?  It's that time again!!  The months are just flying by, we're only one month away from half way there.

So about this time every month, in this section of my blog post, I say, "this is my latest favorite" and I truly mean it.  Unfortunately I have been dreading the apron block.  It was easily my least favorite block in the whole quilt, for the last 4 months I've been thinking what I could make to replace that block, and here's why,  I don't like to cook.  I don't like anything about it, from the grocery shopping to the cleanup, and every tedious step in-between.  If I lived by myself I would survive off of sandwiches, lean cuisine meals and cereal, and when my husband travels, I do just that.  So when I saw that apron block I immediately thought of work, not play, and this quilt is supposed to be about the fun things in life.

Since the Fat Quarter Shop was kind enough to ask me to participate in this sew along, I didn't think it would be polite not to make the block.  But a funny thing happened while I was piecing my apron, I didn't think about all the tedious tasks associated with the daily grind of being the chief cook and bottle washer, I started thinking about all the times my daughter and I have cook together, and we always wear aprons.  Those are very happy times. It usually just happens at Thanksgiving and Christmas, which makes those times even more special.  So while this block still isn't my latest favorite, I do like it, a lot, I think you will too.

I made a few changes to my block.  I used a different Bonnie and Camille family of fabric, I used Scrumptious. I wanted a pick frilly apron and that fabric fit the bill.  I also swapped out the one big pocket for two smaller ones, because that's how my apron looks.

This block is not hard, but you need to pay close attention to each step, there's a lot of right, left, top, bottom sewing going on.  For the first 4 blocks, I cut out the pieces then just looked at the picture, for this block I read and followed the instructions.  I had no issues, and the block went together easily, just don't start on this one when you're in a hurry or not in the mood to pay attention to the details.

I am thrilled that the FQS has already surpassed it's initial goal of raising $10,000 for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and its new goal of $20,000. The last time I checked the amount raised was over $22,000. Great job, give yourself a pat on the back!  As a reminder, the monthly patterns are a free download, a donation is up to you, the suggested donation is $5.  Here is a link to the pattern, instructional video, donation page, and everything else you need to know.  (click here)

It's Snapshots Time!

Are you ready for a new Snapshots block?  It's that time again!!  It nearly snuck up on me, I made my block over the weekend.

This month's pattern, Block Four, is Puppy Love, my latest favorite.

I made a few changes to my block.  I used the Puppy Love fabric to make my sewing machine, block two, so I needed to select different fabric.  I really liked the basket print so I just used a different color way. And since my puppy is a boy, I went with a blue bow.  I also exchanged the puppy fabric for a beige and white dottie print from my stash, that matched my puppy a little better.  Also,  my puppy has a big brown nose and brown eyes, so I used some brown stash fabric for those.

The pattern was very easy to follow, the easiest block so far, it only took me a couple of hours to cut and piece this block.  I played around with the eyes some, the pattern calls for buttons, I went with some fabric circles using the Kay Buckley Perfect Circles,  but coming up with the perfect size took a couple of tries.

Four blocks done, 8 more to go.

This is my Puppy Love model, Cooper.

I am thrilled that the FQS has already surpassed it's initial goal of raising $10,000 for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and its new goal of $20,000. The last time I checked the amount raised was over $21,500. Great job, give yourself a pat on the back!  As a reminder, the monthly patterns are a free download, a donation is up to you, the suggested donation is $5.  Here is a link to the pattern, instructional video, donation page, and everything else you need to know.  (click here)

It's Snapshots Time!

I can't believe it's the 15th of the month already.  My March got off to a rough start weather wise but things are improving and flowers are even starting to sprout out of the wet cold ground.   Additionally, I'm finally starting to adjust to the time change.  So besides all that March activity a new month also means it's time for a new Fat Quarter Shop Snapshots pattern!  WOO HOO!!

This month's pattern, Block Three, is Put the Kettle On, my latest favorite.

I made my block exactly like the pattern, no changes this month, but I am eager to see what you use to make this block.  I was blown away by the very clever and interesting sewing machine blocks that were pieced last month.  Since I actually have a red polka dot tea pot in my kitchen I couldn't imagine any other option.

The pattern was very easy to follow, it only took me a couple of hours to cut and piece this block.

Three blocks done, 9 more to go.

I am thrilled that the FQS has already surpassed it's initial goal of raising $10,000 for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and set a new goal of $20,000. The last time I checked the amount raised was over $17,000.

February is over half gone.  But besides meaning the month is going too fast, the 15th also means it's time for a new Fat Quarter Shop Snapshots pattern!  WOO HOO!!

This month's pattern, Block Two, is Sew On & Sew On, my latest favorite.

I used a different Daysail print than what is used in the pattern for my sewing machine.  I also swapped out the "buttons" fabric for an older Bonnie and Camille print, and of course my thread needed to be pink.  But other than that, it's exactly like the pattern.  LOL

Regardless of the fabric you use, your sewing machine will look great too, the pattern was very easy to follow.

Two blocks done, 10 more to go.

I am thrilled that the FQS has already surpassed it's initial goal of $10,000 for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.  What a great start.  Wouldn't it be something if we could double that initial amount.  As a reminder, the monthly patterns are a free download, a donation is up to you, the suggested donation is $5.  Here is a link to the pattern, donation page, and everything else you need to know.  (click here)

Snapshots Sew Along - Block 1 - Let Them Eat Cake

Great news, the first pattern for the Fat Quarter Shop's Snapshots Sew Along is available!  The wait is finally over.

The first block is named Let Them Eat Cake.

Here is my finished block.

The pattern uses a green print fabric for the cake stand but I substituted the pink fabric from an earlier Bonnie and Camille line for my cake stand, because if I really had a cake stand it would be pink.

I cut and pieced this block in an afternoon, the directions were easy to follow and the block easy to piece.

Kimberly at the Fat Quarter Shop has released a video tutorial for this block. Link to video, click here.

The Let Them Eat Cake pattern is available here.  Link to pattern, click here.

The pattern is a free download, but the Fat Quarter Shop is asking for a donation of at least $5 for the pattern to St. Jude Children's Hospital.   Link to donation page, click here.

There are some other quilters who are sewing along, you can check out their progress below:

Snapshots Quilt Along for a Cause

Kimberly and the great staff at the Fat Quarter Shop have announced their 2015 Quilt Along for A Cause.  The quilt is this adorable pattern called "Snapshots".  The cause is St Jude Children's Research Hospital.

The theme of this quilt is snapshots of happiness in our lives.

I'm planning to participate in the quilt along and I hope you join me.

Here are a few reason why you may want to join in the fun.

1.  The Fabric - the fabric for this quilt is Daysail by Bonnie and Camille for Moda. I love the prints and colors in this line, I think you will too.

2.  The Pattern - the quilt consists of 12 blocks that finish at 12" x 16", cute blocks, really cute blocks.  Can you pick a favorite?  I can't, I love them all, and that's just from promo picture, once these finished blocks start popping up in blogland I think they'll look even better and be even harder to resist!  (I even like the cat block and I'm not a cat person!)  The quilt finishes at 66.5" x 88.5".

3.  The Fat Quarter Shop - If this would be your first block of the month from the Fat Quarter Shop you are in for a treat, if you've participated in some of their prior BOM's then you know what to expect, a cute package shipped on time, generous pieces of fabric, excellent and easy to follow directions.

4.  The Cause - St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.  The patterns will be available for download the 15th of each month starting in January.  The patterns are free, Kimberly is asking for a voluntary suggested donation of $5 for each pattern.  The Fat Quarter Shop and Moda will match the donations we make up to $10,000.  Kimberly also plans to auction the quilt with the proceeds going to St. Jude.  St Jude Children's Hospital is known for its research and treatment of children with cancer and other life threatening diseases.  No family ever pays for St. Jude care.  This is due to the donations the hospital collects.  It's a cause I have supported in the past and am happy to support through this promotion.

5.  Fun and Success - Some of my favorite quilts are projects I made sewing with others, and even though this quit couldn't be any cuter,  I think sewing along with friends will add to my enjoyment and keep me on track so that I piece my block every month and finish this quilt with everyone else.  Cute monthly block kits aren't nearly as good as cute finished blocks.

Here's a link to the kit details, click here, there is even a cute backing kit available, don't pass it up.  The FQS is currently taking pre-orders, the kits will ship in February.

Here's a link to an introductory video featuring Kimberly and Bonnie and Camille,  click here.

So what do you think, want to join the fun?  I sure hope so!!

PS - The blocks are totally pieced, no appliqué was used in the making of the Snapshots quilt.
