Evening Bloom - Block 2

The other day, someone left a comment asking if I was still working on my needle turn applique project, Evening Bloom. Not only am I still stitching away, I'm still loving it.

It's the perfect ending to a perfect day and the perfect ending to a lousy day!

So here's block 2 . .

In full bloom!

I'm working on Evening Bloom with a friend, which is not only fun but keeps us on task to meet our goal of one block a month. Here are our blocks together.

And here are my first two blocks, this is how they will look in the quilt. I'm working away on block 3, when it's finished the first row of this project will be done!

If you're still trying to decide if you should finally give applique a try, don't wait any longer, the only thing that disappoints me about needle turn applique is that I didn't try it sooner. I guess I just needed the perfect project.

Today Nicole at Sister's Choice Quilts is interviewing Monique Dillard, the designer of the book Fat Quarter Winners. Be sure to check it out!

  1. Lovely. What great progress! I have two questions that maybe you ran into since you are working on a Black Bird Design pattern. My pattern didn't come with the layout as a full size pattern. Instead it had a small diagram of the layout on a a grid. Did yours come like that? If it did, how would you transfer it onto the background? My other question is about stabilizing the block while you applique on it. With a large background I find that it needs some thing so it won't go all floppy. Do you use a stabilizer? Now that Elizabeth is done, I think I'm going to tackle my applique in my spare time.

  2. They're beautiful! Are you stitching them as you lay out each piece or are you laying the entire block out and then stitching?

  3. So pretty!! You are doing such a wonderful job on the applique!!

  4. Your blocks are gorgeous!! Isn't applique relaxing at the end of the day?

  5. Beautiful blocks, Thelma! I love hand applique and yet haven't done much in well over a year. Might be time to search for a project. :-)

  6. you ALMOST have me convinced - i could use a perfect ending to perfectly lousy days ... but i can't imagine anything i might stitch being as lovely as yours!

  7. You are amazing!!! You make it all look so easy! Your blocks are just beautiful Thelma... and if I remember right there are only 9 blocks to that quilt so with block 3 you are 1/3 of the way done!

  8. Thelma,
Your needleturn applique is just beautiful! I love the little fans in the corners.

  9. beautiful I love the fabrics /colors too
    oh I am jealous!

  10. Thelma your applique is're inspiring me to get out my needle and thread.

  11. Thelma your blocks are gorgeous! Your fabric choices are just beautiful and rich !
