Blogger Girls BOM, It's a Wrap!

As soon as I finished up my month 6 blocks for Monique's Blogger Girl BOM sew-along, I started working on my setting.  That was back in May, because I needed to have my blocks done for the block reveal on June 1st.

I made my blocks half as big as the pattern, they finish at 6 inches.  Since my blocks were so small, Monique's block setting didn't really work with my little blocks, so I decided to come up with something else.

And decided on this.

So at this point, this project is just 26" x 26", and I wanted it to be a little bigger, so I added another border.

I thought I would add some bigger squares, to get a better look as some of the prints in those fabrics.  My pieced blocks were small and it made it hard to really see the pretty design in this fabric.

The whole time I was working on this project I knew one thing for sure, the red polka-dot print from Sweetwater's Hometown was going to be my outer border.

So I added the border, took a picture, then put it up, one less thing on my To Do List, and something I didn't have to think about again until it was time for the parade.

But I did think about it, even though the quilt was hanging in the closet, that red polka-dot border bothered me, I would look at that picture and wonder what was wrong, was the red too bold, the border too wide?  Even though I was considering this project done, it was still driving me crazy.

So I finally asked a friend what she thought of the border and she told me it was a matter of scale, that the dot print was too big for the small pieced center. That was it, I couldn't put my finger on the problem myself,  but as soon as I read that explanation I agreed, that was the problem.  So that gave me this weekend to come up with Plan B.

At first I thought maybe adding some white to the dots would help.  And tried this.

But it didn't really help, the dots are still too big, even surrounded by white.

So then I decided to add a plain white outer border, and I like it.  I've never put a plain white outer border on a project so it's a nice change of pace.  I guess I could use that polka-dot fabric for the binding, but I'm so over it I think I'll go with a yellow print instead.

This is Lifetime Quilt Number 107 - Blogger Girl BOM

Month 6 Blogger Girls BOM

Can you believe it's June 1st!  I have no idea where this year is flying off to.  The good news about it being June 1st, it's time for the latest and the last Blogger Girl BOM block.  Yip, this is the last one, and it's a good one for wrapping up the sew along.

Every month I always say this is my favorite month (except  month two, the robot head month).  I won't say that today because month 5 is still my favorite, but I will say this, this block is the easiest of the group to piece and I do love how it turned out, it's my second favorite block!

And here are all my blocks, pieced and ready for some sort of setting, I'm still mulling over my options, I'm going with something different than what Monique designed.

The fabric that I'm using is Hometown by Sweetwater for Moda.  Oh, and one more thing, my blocks will finish at 6 inches, not the 12 inches in the patterns.  I thought it would be fun to have a Mini Blogger Girl BOM quilt.  Monique said she was fine with me changing up the size of the blocks, but that she wouldn't provided directions for making two sets of blocks, one for the 12 inch blocks and one for the 6 inch blocks, and I can't say that I blame her.  So part of the fun for me each month was shrinking down the pattern.  I must have done a good job because not once did someone leave a comment saying they thought my blocks looked a little off.  If you were thinking it, and polite enough not to mention it, now you know why!

There are a few other quilters displaying their month 6 blocks today along with Monique, who will provide the pattern instructions, be sure to check them out.

The goal is for everyone, including me, to have the blocks pieced and tops assembled by July 1.  I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's finished top.  Be sure to follow along and add your blocks and project to our Flickr account.

Blogger Girl BOM - Month Five

What's more surprising to you, that it is May 1st (HAPPY MAY DAY!) or that we only have one more  month of Monique's Blogger Girl Sew Along?  I think I'm more surprised it's May, it sure doesn't feel like May weather wise.

I love this month's blocks, my favorite so far, and yes, I know I say that every month.

Blocks so nice

I made them twice!

I decided I needed a few more blocks for my project so I doubled up on this month's design, it's my favorite.  I think I would love a whole quilt made of nothing but these blocks.  Just in case you've forgotten, my fabric is Hometown by Sweetwater for Moda.

Have you checked out our Flickr page lately, there are some amazing blocks being shared.  If you've not added your blocks to our Flickr page please do so, I love looking at all the different versions.

Here are few more bloggers with blocks to share, plenty of inspiration, yours for the taking.

Blogger Girl BOM . . . .

Wow, where did February go, it doesn't seem possible that it's time for our next set of Blogger Girl BOM blocks already, we're up to block 3.

I think I said something last month about not putting any red in this month's blocks, I was just kidding.

So here is version 1

and here is Version 2,

same pattern, just different fabric placement.

This block is my favorite block so far.  It went together in no time.  I used Monique's Fit to be Quarter and Companion rulers to make the square in a square blocks.  I've not had much luck with these blocks in the past, I always had trouble with shrinkage, I would start out with the correct block size, but by the time I added each corner of fabric, my block would be too small.  I did not have that trouble using Monique's rulers, the block is oversized then trimmed to the correct size.

Here are my blocks, I love them all, even those robot heads!  My fabric is Hometown by Sweetwater for Moda.

I hope you've been checking out the blocks on Flickr, there are some amazing fabric choices out there.  We're up to almost 100 pictures of blocks.

Monique will be demonstrating her rulers along with providing the block directions over at her blog, go check it out, here.

And finally here are a few of my Blogger Girl BOM friends who also have some blocks to share, don't miss those either!

Blogger Girls BOM . . . .

It's February 1st!

Instead of the saying the first of each month, "where did last month go", and at the end of the year, "where did this year go!" I decided to do a little summary of where my month did go, maybe that will help me be more appreciative of what I did accomplish during the year.

So during the month of January I packed up my Christmas decorations, took trips to Las Vegas and California, finished my 100th quilt, started my 101st quilt, started a little side project,  made my Blogger Girl BOM blocks and got a root canal. A very productive month!

Speaking of Blogger Girl BOM, here are my blocks for month two,

version one

and version two

Of all the quilt blocks in all the world this is my least favorite block.  I think it looks like a robot head. I replaced this block in my last BOM project. I'm keeping these blocks for now, maybe they won't look so robotic when they're in the quilt with all the other lovely blocks.

And here are all my finished blocks.

My fabric is Hometown by Sweetwater for Moda.  Memo to self, next month use no red!

Check out Monique's blog, Open Gate Quilts, for instructions on downloading block two pattern directions.

Also, check out these blogs for some more versions of Block Two.

Thanks to all for the lovely comments and congratulations on completing my 100th quilt.  As you probably assumed, my 100th quilt wasn't exactly what I thought it would be when I started, and I was Ok with where I ended, but I felt really good about it after reading your supportive comments, thanks so very very much!

A New Year, A New Start . . .

Happy New Year!

I hope 2013 is off to a great start for you!

Today is the kickoff of Monique's Blogger Girls BOM.  Just in case you're new to my blog, Monique, of Open Gate Quilts, is hosting a free block of the month.  The first of the month Monique will post instructions for a block on her blog.  Besides Monique's blocks, several other bloggers will also be posting pictures of their blocks for each month.

Here are my blocks

Block One

And Block One different version, same pattern, different fabric placement.

I like them both, can't pick a favorite!

I've decided to us my Hometown by Sweetwater for Moda fabric.  I bought some fabric last year when I thought I was going to make that adorable Sweetwater pattern named The Neighborhood.  After I got the pattern and found out it was an applique project not a piecing project, that fabric just sat in a bin in my closet.  I think it will make a better Blogger Girls BoM project.  I'm ready to work with some light colors, Spring may be months away where I live, but not in my sewing room!

Check out Monqiue's blog, Open Gate Quilts,  for instructions on downloading the pattern directions.

Also, check out these blogs for some more Block One versions:

Nicole from Sister’s Choice  -  sisterschoice.typepad.com
Lisa from Stashmaster - The-Stashmaster.blogspot.com

This is what the finished quilt should look like, well this is what Monique's quilt will look like, mine will probably look somewhat different.

You can go with a 6 block project or a 12 block project. I'm going with the 12 block project, where you make two blocks using the same pattern, but different fabric combinations.

We're planning a parade for all the finished tops and have created a Flickr account for everyone to share  their blocks.  The Flickr Group is named Blogger Girls BoM.

I hope you join us!
