3 Barns

So here are my 9 naked star blocks,

And here they are, finally, all of them dressed up.

The only thing left to do is add the sashing strips.

Just in case you've forgotten, here's what the finished quilt should look like.

So I pieced and cut my strips, but when I put them in between my blocks, I didn't like the looks of it so much.  It's too something, too distracting, too bold, I don't know, too not just me I guess.

Maybe dividing the strips in half with a strip of yellow fabric would be more pleasing,

no, I don't think so.

Maybe dividing the strips in half with a strip of background fabric would be more pleasing,

no, I don't think so.

Maybe dividing wider strips in half with a strip of background fabric would be more pleasing,

no, I don't think so.

Maybe no strips, just background fabric,

no, I don't think so.

So I finally decided to go with no sashing at all, and sewed all the blocks together.

It's at this point that I realized that this would have been an better idea had I made the hsts surrounding the blocks from just one group of colors, like all the greys or all the pinks.  It sort of looks like a hot mess right now with everything running together.   I'm hoping adding the sashing to the outside will create a border that pulls it all together.  Stay tuned!

  3. Amazing that "less is more" is appropriate at this point. I too can't wait to see your border.

  4. I like the looks of the quilt so far.

  6. Loved seeing all the auditions. I need to do more of that when I create.

  7. If that's a "hot mess" it's just about the prettiest one I've ever seen!!!

  8. looks great, I think its wonderful that you take the time to work out the quilt pattern to make it your own. Still looks like the original pattern that you loved enough to want to make it.
can't wait to see the next step you make!

  9. How did I know you were going to change it up?!? LOL
So fun to follow the path of creativity :)

  10. I actually loved the original sashing in there Thelma; more is more and I thought the sashing was rich with the stars. I also like the final "heaven" of stars on their own too! I love the way you give us more "verions" than the original pattern. Stephani in N. TX (Tomazec@aol.com)

  11. It is nice that you can see different versions and auditions first before you put it together....something I need to learn to do. Looks really nice without and love the effect. Can't wait to see what you come up with for borders.

  12. Thanks for showing us your process in deciding what your final layout will be! So interesting to see how a skilled quilter like yourself makes decisions on changing the pattern.

  13. I wish I could think more outside the box like you do. It's interesting to see how you decide things. It's going to look beautiful no matter what you do.

  14. Think what you ended up with is great. I liked the background one too. I bet if you used just different red fabrics on the first option it may not feel so "busy". Bet it would look good.

  15. I think it looks great without uniform hst's. Nice job, as usual - can't wait to see the final border.

  16. I like your last option the best too. The HST's together make their own border/sashing. looking good!

  17. Love everything you do especially if it is red! Try doing one more row of hst's on outside edges so they look like your sashings and then the white edges will be on the outside ready for a finish border.

  18. it is a bit of a hot mess but I DO like it. I'm sure the borders will pull it all together.

  19. Thelma, you are so funny. All the versions looked fine to me, but I agree with your final choice. It's already beautiful, and will be terrific when you are done!

  20. Maybe if the sashing strips had been cut to the width they were in the pattern... just saying.

Whatever you decide to do will be perfect because it will be what YOU choose. That's all that ever matters, right?

Besides, you've got that glorious, amazing, spectacular Evening Blooms coming home soon. :)

  21. What if the sashing strips were cut in half?

  22. This looks great! I love them together and all scrappy. Not a hot mess at all. I am loving watching this quilt unfold. I hope you don't fall out of love with it!

  23. I love your blocks, and agree with you that the sashing as per the pattern seems like too much. Your "no sashing" solution looks great. The other option that I like wasn't really one of your options -- but the second photo, with the completed blocks on a gray background that gives the look of thin gray sashing, looks good, too. The gray works with the grays in your blocks, and separating the blocks ever so slightly makes the stars pop a little more. But you will do what is right for YOUR quilt, and it will be beautiful!

  26. Thelma, you always do such an amazing job with your quilts. I like how the hsts form almost a light airy feel dividing the star blocks. I think you should complete the hsts on the outside edge and then maybe a border or two. But whatever you end up doing it will look absoltely beautiful!

  27. I like the idea of using all the different reds as the sashing strips, insead of the whole color scheme. A little more uniform, planned scrappy kind of feel. However, I am no improv guru like you are and I'm sure I'll love any version you come out with.

  28. I think your version looks better than the pattern and I don't think it looks like a hot mess. It looks like it was meant to be scrappy. Nice job!

  29. I'm really loving what you call the "hot mess". It's perfect in my book!

  30. You're having a lot of fun with this quilt. To me, the hsts look like a string of diamonds twirling, with flash of lights sparkling in every direction. Sometimes the light is left; sometimes it's on the right, then higher, then lower. I love it. Thanks for sharing the audition like that with us; I found that very instructive how you proceeded. But in the end, I think you made the right decision. No sashing gets my vote.

  31. I'd be happy to make a "hot mess" as you call it, if it looked as beautiful as this! You have a wonderful eye but I hope you see this as I do--a wonderful success! Can't wait to see how you finish it.

  32. LOL... Hot mess... Sometimes you gotta deviate from the pattern to make it your own. I get it. Doing that on one myself. I like your hot mess. Love it's randomness...

  33. Hi Thelma,
Your blocks are so pretty-- I am waiting with bated breath to see what you come up with-- I have a fat eighth bundle of Chateau Rouge waiting too!

  34. I think everything runs together without another sashing the stars dissapear

    1. That's kinda what I was thinking also. I think Thelma would want us to be honest about it.

  35. As someone earlier said, I think the gray of the wall made a nice sashing effect. It seems like it does need something, like the blocks need more separation, maybe the background strips like in the next to last picture. Let it simmer a few days, I'm sure it will be beautiful when you are finished, whatever you decide.
